The night of San Juan is one of the most eagerly anticipated celebrations of the year. Bonfires, firecrackers, and outdoor gatherings fill terraces and outdoor spaces on a night marked by light, warmth, and tradition. But precisely because of the presence of fire, it’s also a good opportunity to remember the importance of choosing the right materials in settings where safety must always be a priority.

In the technical textiles sector, flame-retardant (FR) materials are designed to provide a safer response to fire, helping to reduce risks in applications where protection requirements are higher. This is an active barrier, intended to slow the spread of a flame before it can cause greater harm. In professional settings, hospitality projects, outdoor areas, or high-use textile solutions, having fabrics tailored to these needs is not a minor detail—it is a responsible decision.

Regulations We Comply With

DIN 4102B1↻
B1 · DIN 4102This is a key German standard for fire safety. This standard specifies the minimum fire resistance of materials through the fire tunnel test. To pass this test, materials may burn when exposed to a direct heat source, but they must self-extinguish once the heat source is removed, keeping combustion gases below 200°C. Products that successfully pass the tests are awarded the B1 certification.
UNE-EN 15619T1 · T2↻
T1 / T2 · UNE-EN 15619This is the European standard that Spain has adopted as the official standard for coated technical fabrics. It specifies a series of tests to be conducted and minimum results required to certify that the material is “very difficult to ignite.”
NF P 92-507M1 · M2↻
M1 / M2 · NF P 92-507M1 and M2 certifications are classifications that indicate the fire resistance of materials, based on specific European fire safety standards, and help assess and manage fire risks in buildings, vehicles, and other environments. Extremely difficult to ignite: they do not spread flames rapidly and contribute minimally to the development of a fire, without releasing large quantities of toxic or flammable gases when exposed to fire.
EN 13773Class 1↻
Class 1 · EN 13773European standard for fire reaction of curtains and hanging fabrics. It classifies fabrics from Class 1 (the highest) to Class 5 (the lowest) by combining two tests: EN 1101 for flammability and EN 13772 for flame spread. Class 1 is the most stringent level: the fabric does not ignite, and the flame barely spreads, even under radiant heat.

Materials that successfully pass the tests can be classified as T1, the most stringent level, indicating excellent fire resistance, no dripping when burning, and that the flame extinguishes instantly upon removal of the heat source; or T2, which is the standard level, meeting the minimum requirements but with longer extinguishing times.

Some of our flame-retardant fabrics

TOP FRT1
A solution-dyed polyester fabric with a textile-like appearance and T1 fire-resistance certification. Made from 100% solution-dyed polyester, it offers a color guarantee with excellent results in both visual appearance and mechanical performance. It is perfect for use in awnings, pergolas, or decorative items such as interior velums or curtains.
PORT M1T1
A technical fabric characterized by its flame-retardant properties, which comply with T1 standards, and which also offers high strength, mechanical stability, and water resistance. It is widely used for sun protection in items such as sunshades, tents, pergolas, etc. Thanks to its antifungal treatment, it is also used in humid environments, such as on boat covers or boat enclosures.
VIP FRT2 · B1
1100 dtex high-tenacity polyester fabric, double-sided coated, with FR T2 and B1 certifications. It is the perfect fabric for making awnings, tents, RV awnings, canopies, playgrounds, inflatables, camping tents, etc.
SUPER TRANS FRT2
A high-tenacity 1100 dtex polyester fabric, coated on both sides and 0.54 mm thick, with high tear and tensile strength. It is T2-certified and is perfect for truck covers, tensioned structures, or cargo covers.
Office CollectionM1Class 1Flame Retardant
The Office collection brings together technical fabrics and screens designed for both indoor and outdoor building applications. It is a versatile range that meets the needs of every project, with various fire-resistance certifications—such as M1, Class 1, or Flame Retardant—depending on the requirements of each space.

During celebrations such as San Juan, the increase in outdoor activity, proximity to fire, and intensive use of these spaces make the choice of materials even more important, especially in projects where regulations, public use, or environmental conditions require specific performance characteristics.

Sauleda’s FR flame-retardant fabrics meet this need to combine safety, quality, and design. It’s not just about incorporating a functional material, but about integrating a textile solution that preserves the space’s aesthetics, instills confidence, and helps create better-prepared environments. Safety does not have to be at odds with beauty, nor does protection have to conflict with a project’s visual identity.

San Juan reminds us of the value of tradition, but also of the importance of protecting these spaces with the right materials.
